The Company's history dates back to the year 1892, when Mr Edwin De Alwis Samerawickreme and Mr. Schokman established a partnership to be the pioneer Chartered Auctioneers in Ceylon (as it was known during that era).
With the migration of Mr. Schokman some years later, Mr. Samerawickreme continued and preserved the business, which now prides itself in completing over 115 years in its line of work and has produced its third generation of auctioneers.
The initial transactions of Schokman & Samerawickreme were carried out mainly with sterling companies of tea estates, other government institutes and boards related to the industry. Hence, the first office of the establishment was located in the colonial tea plantation region of Dickoya.
Schokman & Samerawickreme soon became one of the most successful family conglomerates in the country. While maintaining its core business of Auctioneering, today the organization has diversified into the areas of valuations of movable and immovable property and is the preferred Realtor amongst diplomatic missions and of varied companies and individuals. As the business developed the head office was relocated to Kandy and later a city office was established in Colombo.
As the company expanded their personalized professional services to cover the entire island, Schokman & Samerawickreme has become a household name spanning generations. We take pleasure and pride in having provided our services to many Government Institutions, Private Sector Enterprises, Foreign Embassies and Diplomatic Missions, and many eminent individuals in the country, such as late Messes W R C Hankok, J R C Backhouse, E L Senanayake, and Sir Bennett Soysa. Services in the form of valuations were also carried out for late leaders of the country such as Mr. J R Jayawardena and Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
The late Shirley Samerawickreme was a 'maestro' of the trade and had over 50 years of experience in the chosen field. He joined his father and brothers at Schokman & Samerawickreme in 1955 and was an expert Auctioneer and a Valuer. His early education was at St. Sylvester's College Kandy.
